Oil prices drop on Iran Oman talks

Crude oil prices fell earlier today after news reports emerged about Iran and Oman resuming talks on joint management of the Strait of Hormuz, sparking hopes that the waterway could soon reopen for normal traffic. According to the filing, the two countries are discussing a “joint temporary navigational corridor” and clearing the strait of mines. As a result, Brent crude was trading at $86.69 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was at $80.61 per barrel.

Traders seem to have brushed off the latest US sanctions against Iran, which aim to further restrict its oil trade.

ING commodity analysts noted that a Pakistani statement on progress in peace talks also contributed to the downward pressure on crude prices. However, they cautioned against expecting a swift return to normal in the Persian Gulf. The analysts, Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey, wrote that any agreement between Iran and Oman does not necessarily mean a normalization of oil flows through the key chokepoint.

They added that the US would likely need to lift its blockade on Iranian ports and ease sanctions on Iran before normalization occurs.

Meanwhile, tanker tracking data from Windward showed that only one vessel, a Barbados-flagged LPG carrier, traversed the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. The tanker moved in dark mode, according to the data.

The US claims that an average of 8-9m b/d of oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, which may be achievable over short time periods, ING’s Patterson and Manthey noted. However, over a longer time frame, this number seems aggressive, and several ship-tracking estimates are coming in much lower, ranging from 2m b/d to around 6m b/d.

The situation in the Persian Gulf remains complex, with multiple factors at play.
