AppZen rolls out AI system for real-time corporate payment checks

AppZen has introduced Autonomous Cards, a new AI-driven system designed to streamline corporate payment processes. The technology, launching October 26, integrates with existing company payment cards, such as purchasing, fleet, or virtual cards, to monitor transactions in real time. Unlike traditional systems that review transactions after they post, AppZen’s agents analyze spending as it occurs, flagging suspicious activity, verifying compliance with company policy, and even filling in transaction details for later reference.
The system’s core function is to automate routine checks while reducing reliance on manual oversight. For example, it can identify unusual spending patterns or policy violations during a transaction, then guide employees through corrections before submission. Anant Kale, AppZen’s CEO and cofounder, emphasized that this approach differs from retroactive AI audits, calling it a “new operating model” that keeps finance teams efficient without removing human judgment from critical decisions.
Human intervention remains limited to exceptions requiring approval. When the AI detects a potential issue, it generates a case report summarizing the problem, allowing finance teams to focus only on transactions needing oversight. The technology also aims to mitigate risks as companies expand their card programs, ensuring new cards align with existing controls.
While AppZen targets enterprise use, the broader trend of AI-driven payments is extending to consumers. Mastercard announced a similar expansion of its Agent Pay system, which provides contextual insights for AI-initiated transactions. The company projects that 10% of online shoppers will routinely use such technology within four years, with global adoption reaching over 300 million users by 2030. These estimates are based on surveys of 13,000 parent-and-teen pairs across 13 European countries, published in Mastercard’s September report on the future of payments.
Corporate adoption of autonomous payment tools reflects a shift toward real-time financial oversight, where AI handles repetitive tasks while preserving human control over exceptions. The approach aligns with broader industry moves to reduce fraud and improve spend visibility, though widespread implementation will depend on balancing automation with operational flexibility.
AppZen’s system supports multiple card types, including ghost cards and virtual cards, tailoring responses to transaction context. The rollout begins October 26, with the company positioning it as a way to modernize finance workflows while maintaining accountability.
