Namibia sends president to UN General Assembly for global diplomacy

Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will head the country’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York, leaving Windhoek on 18 September. The gathering, centered on “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”, extends through late September, with the High-Level General Debate set for 22–26 September and 28 September.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah will present Namibia’s national address on 23 September, detailing the nation’s positions on worldwide issues while aligning them with Africa’s development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The timing aligns with escalating global pressures, armed conflicts, economic volatility, and climate threats, demanding stronger collective action.

The UNGA’s focus provides a forum for member states to evaluate how the organization can address the needs of varied nations more effectively. For Namibia, this means advocating for shifts away from reliance on raw material exports, instead prioritizing industrial growth, value addition, and employment generation through both domestic and regional supply networks. The president’s discussions will center on conflict resolution, infrastructure development, critical minerals, climate adaptation, and youth development, all key components of Namibia’s Sixth National Development Plan.

The delegation will comprise the First Gentleman, Cabinet members, and senior officials, showing Namibia’s emphasis on high-level diplomacy during the week-long proceedings.
