The European Union is a technology, trade, and industry powerhouse. This was the key message from the recent Munich Security Conference, as described by Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank.

From Poland’s offshore wind farms to Dutch fiber-optic sensors and Belgian satellites, Europe is showcasing its manufacturing excellence and industrial might. These projects are not just about energy or technology; they are creating thousands of jobs and strategic independence.

A continent reshaped by disruption

Europe has faced challenges head-on, from the COVID-19 pandemic to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In 2020, a European biotech company developed a vaccine in record time.

This resilience is evident in the numbers. The EU’s investment in its energy transition hit a record €400 billion in 2025. European defense stocks have tripled in value over the past three years, and the continent now leads in critical areas like artillery shell production.

Unlike past crises, where recovery was slow, Europe has adapted quickly. A new venture-capital ecosystem for defense and security has emerged, and the EU’s industrial production capacity now rivals that of the US in key sectors.

The EU’s ability to reinvent itself in times of crisis has positioned it as a stable force in a volatile world. Europe’s strength lies in its commitment to values, rules, and multilateralism.

The EU’s unification, born from the ashes of two world wars, serves as a reminder of its enduring principles. Today, Europe remains dedicated to inclusion, equality, and peace—values that guide its actions on the global stage.

To preserve this way of life, Europe is focusing on deeper integration, large-scale investments, and simplification of its processes. By supporting win-win partnerships, the EU aims to diversify its supply chains and open new markets, ensuring its continued growth and influence.

The Poland wind farms are a prime example. With 233 turbines, each nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower, they will power 5.5 million households with clean energy. This project, along with others across the continent, is part of a superhighway for electrons that links the windy northern seas to the sunlit Mediterranean.

A new era of innovation and security

Europe is not just focusing on energy; it’s also leading in defense and technology. Dutch fiber-optic sensors will protect critical infrastructure, while Belgian satellites and radar systems from France and Spain enhance surveillance.

These advancements are part of nearly 900 investment projects financed by the European Investment Bank Group last year. By leveraging EU budget guarantees, the bank is mobilizing private investment to drive the energy and technological revolutions.

The transition to clean energy is accelerating. This includes projects like hydropower in Austria, new railways in Czechia, and clean technologies in Portugal.

European defense is also booming.

A stable force in a volatile world

Europe’s resilience is evident in its economic performance. Despite challenges like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and energy price spikes, the eurozone’s GDP grew faster than China and the US in 2022. European companies have diversified trade flows and maintained strong growth.

As the world’s leading trade power and a major provider of humanitarian aid, it continues to build bridges rather than walls, funding projects from global vaccination campaigns to water supply improvements in cities like Amman and Karachi.
