According to Christopher Stiegeler, Director of EBC Financial Group, investors and central banks may choose gold over other assets for several reasons.

One reason is as a hedge against geopolitical uncertainty. Another reason could be concern about the state of a particular government’s finances. Gold may also be attractive simply because it is the most attractive among a basket of asset classes, none of which are particularly attractive at the moment.

Central Banks’ Gold Holdings

Central banks are consistently buying gold, with the World Bank reporting that they purchased around 290 tonnes of gold in the last quarter. Approximately 50 percent of central banks surveyed said they plan to continue adding to their gold stocks over the coming year.

However, this does not necessarily mean that central banks believe the market will go higher. Instead, it is largely about diversification. Stiegeler notes that gold investors may be seeking an asset that does not depend on one currency, one company, or one country.

Traders’ Considerations

Traders need to consider if the current gold price is a temporary reaction to the conflict in Iran or part of a larger change in how investors view risk. If geopolitical tensions remain high, gold could remain attractive due to associated increases in interest rates.

On the other hand, if tensions de-escalate and the price of crude decreases, leading to lower interest rates, gold may become less attractive as an asset class because it does not pay interest. Stiegeler describes this as a trade between fear and opportunity cost.

A cautious analysis of the situation suggests that the attractiveness of gold will depend on the ongoing geopolitical situation and its impact on interest rates and the overall economy. As the situation continues to unfold, investors and traders will be closely watching the price of gold and adjusting their strategies accordingly.

Stiegeler’s comments provide insight into the factors driving gold’s attractiveness. They indicate that investors are seeking a safe haven in times of uncertainty. The current geopolitical situation and its potential impact on interest rates will likely influence the price of gold in the coming months.
