By the time of Raiffeisen’s dying in 1888, credit unions had spread to Italy, France, the Netherlands, England, Austria, and other nations. In the United States, credit unions included and working under a state credit union legislation are tax-exempt underneath Section 501. Federal credit unions organized and operated in accordance with the Federal Credit Union Act are tax-exempt under Section 501.
